Early Pregnancy Scan (Dating and Viability)

The first scan of pregnancy: confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus, checks the heartbeat, and dates the pregnancy.

Sex determination of the foetus is not done at this centre. It is a punishable offence under the PC-PNDT Act, 1994.

About this test

An early pregnancy scan is usually done between 6 and 10 weeks. It confirms the pregnancy is inside the uterus, counts the number of babies, checks for the heartbeat and measures the baby to give an accurate due date. In very early pregnancy a transvaginal scan gives a clearer picture.

When is it advised?

  • A positive pregnancy test
  • Bleeding or pain in early pregnancy
  • Unsure of the date of the last period
  • A previous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy

How to prepare

  • For a scan over the abdomen, come with a full bladder (3–4 glasses of water an hour before).
  • For a transvaginal scan, empty your bladder just before.

On the day

  • A female staff member (chaperone) is always present during the scan.
  • Bring a photo ID (required by law for every pregnancy scan), your doctor's prescription and your previous scan reports.
  • You will fill and sign the PC-PNDT Form F, as required for every pregnancy scan in India.
  • The report is prepared by the radiologist, handed to you and also shared on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

When can the baby's heartbeat be seen?

Usually from about 6 to 7 weeks of pregnancy. If the scan is too early, a repeat scan after 7–10 days may be advised.

Is ultrasound safe in early pregnancy?
